Gunung Gading Escapade I

Sarawak is a place with many hidden treasures and a place filled with dense Jungle. Sarawak is situated on the Island of Borneo together with another Malaysian state Sabah. Sarawak lies at the North-West of the island. The state capital is Kuching, this is where I live. Kuching is largest Urban city in Sarawak and the 4th in Malaysia.

Sarawak and Kuching is not a very well-known place to tourists. In terms of tourism, Sabah and KK are doing much better. This little entry of mine would be on my recent trip to Gunung Gading National Park with is approximately an hour drive from the city of Kuching. Gunung Gading was gazetted as a national park in 1983 and it is located near Lundu town.

This particular national park is where we can observed the biggest and I will assume the smelliest of all flowers in the world. The famous Rafelssia. As far as I know this is and could be the only national park in Sarawak whereby one can witness this fascinating flower, it is not only the flower that would attract one to this place. I would say it is the natural surrounding of this national park which attracts visitors. The serenity and 'songs' of the forest calms one's mind and it is something totally different from the hustle and bustle of the city. A visit to the beautiful place opened my eyes to ... well many weird things.

Our journey began early in the morning. We had breakfast in one of the coffee shops in the city before heading out for and hour plus journey to the town of Lundu where the National park is located. Along the way I noticed that many of the majestic forests has given way to development and oil palm plantation. It was a sad sight to see acres and acres of forest being exploited.

By the time we arrived at Lundu it was already near lunch hour so we decided to have lunch there. Lunch was good, we had some of the specialty there Midin Salad. For those who does not know what is Midin, it is a type of wild fern which is a local delicacy here in Sarawak. It is cooked in many different ways, depending on your preference.

Here are some snapshots of the town and the Midin Salad.
